Refining concept and slogan / logo
Hi Guys, as is difficult to all of us to work "on site" let's cooperate "on line":D
I've got some comments from our last presentation to work on.
It needs to more about:
- Urban Landscape
- Quality of the space (SWOT)
- We need to work in the slogan and logo, it should have more impact and relates to logo directly ie. "Royal Dock One Planet Living" etc.
I've got proposal for the logo based on the "EnsÅ"
- New sketch model
- Historical context

Meeting Wednesday 12th Oct
I really think that we managed to sort out quite a few things yesterday. Great that we have agreed to dump the airport!
Jobs before we meet on Monday in the digital studio at 9.00am:
Concept Diagram - Action All
Sound Bite/Slogon - Action All
Money/Finance - One sheet listing possible sources - Action Dion
SWOT - Consense to 4 pages and add photos - Action Juliet... and please put the photos back Simon!
Brain Storm - We will put together a sheet with all our notes, ideas and sketches on Monday
Model - Karolina is to provide white plasticine. If anyone else has any or can source some quickly, please bring it too for model making on Monday
Any typing, please use Arial Type face.
Below is my first stab at the concept diagram. Might have another go later using stronger colours
It's not as tight as it should be so I better have another attempt.
Soundbites include
ROYAL DOCKS RESURRECTION - BREATHING LIFE BACK INTO LONDON'S DOCKS
Did you know that a Resurrection Plant is a desert plant that curls up into a ball and appears dead during a drought but revives when moistened!

According to what said Simon - I came across eco-community which reduced parking spaces and roads - they encourage people to walk and cycle through well developed pathways/routes and providing outdoor storage boxes for bikes. I think that works.
Anyway it's just a small idea..nth special.

Silvertown Quays Development
Silvertown Quays
Development News Snippets
Joint developers Silvertown Quays Limited, Kajima Urban Development International and the LDA were to transform the 24 hectare site into a sprawling 4,900 home scheme with offices, retail, leisure and the Biota aquarium, creating 2,000 jobs.
By 2007, Newham Council had granted planning permission and Bank of Scotland had agreed funding of £119million, but the downturn stalled work and the LDA issued termination notices in September…….
……..Architects Journal thinks this may come in the form of a wider Royal Docks "eco town" masterplan housing up to 30,000 people. Developer Ballymore confirmed that it was involved in discussions, but that they were "at a very early stage".
www.wharf.co.uk March 2010
The LDA are seeking a developer or partner to undertake a high quality redevelopment to ensure the optimum regeneration of this important site.
•50 acre brown field freehold site, with high quality dockside position
•Extant planning permission demonstrating mass of development
•Opportunity for a market led development solution, taking into consideration the ambition for destination uses and wider community regeneration
•Royal Docks designated as "Enterprise Zone"
•Crossrail delivered at Custom House 2018
•Soft Market testing prior to formal procurement commencing June 2011
Silvertown Quays offers distinct competitive advantages including:
•The fiscal and practical benefits of Enterprise Zone status
•Exceptional transport links, including DLR, Jubillee line (Canning Town / North Greenwich), cable car link, City airport and Crossrail (2018)
•Proximity to major business and tourism destinations including Indigo O2 Centre, ExCel, Canary Wharf and the Olympic Park.
•Proximity to Siemens Urban Sustainability Centre, a £30 million visitor attraction, research facility and showcase for sustainable technologies (completion 2012) www.siemens.co.uk/.../goahead-for-london-sustainability-centre
•The "Green Enterprise District" status of the area
A shortlist of seven companies are battling to win the contract to redevelop part of the Royal Docks.
The London Development Agency and Newham Council have invited the companies to submit their outline proposals for the 50-acre Silvertown Quays site before deciding on a preferred developer next March…..
……They are now asked to come up with outline proposals for the site's redevelopment by October 10.

And Finally. An anonymous blogg from a reader of The Architect’s Journal 2 years agol.
It makes interesting reading

This is yet another blow for the Royal Docks. I am not surprised this Aquarium project sank (largest in Europe). Who is going to invest in a project near the London City Airport with all the aircraft noise? (Worst during early mornings and evenings). Does any want to live near an airport? You can't open windows or enjoy open spaces. Even Boris Johnson who is bothered by aircraft noise at Heathrow, did nothing to stop expansion at London City Airport! (he did say it would blight the area, then mysteriously changed his mind!).
There is so much that can be done with the Royal Docks. But what can be done with a noisy airport with smells of aviation fuel?
It is a scandal that Newham Council has approved expansion of flights by 50% from 76,000 to 120,000. That would mean 1 flight every 90 seconds. Newham Council and London City Airport say they attract investment to the area. Really? This is proof enough that it doesn't!
When the airport was built in 1987, it was limited to 30,000 flights as it was in a residential area and only small propeller were allowed planes. However all the promises about no expansion have been broken. These days they are using bigger and noisier regional sized JET planes.
Many professionals who have moved into regenerated parts of the Royal Docks in Newham are making a move out. And the noise is effecting areas in Thamesmead (Thames Gateway) and Tower Hamlets. And this is the same Borough charged with the Olympics and regeneration of East London!
Newham Council has approved expansion even though another brand new waterfront office complex Building 1000 remained empty for 5 years. And even then it was bought by Newham Council at a cost £100m, no doubt to hide the embarrassment of the Council's partnership with the airport. Another 3 office buildings were never built. So in all the airport has costs £400m for the offices plus £1.5bn for Silvertown Quay.
But don't expect to read too much in the paper. The local paper will not print anything bad about Newham Council they depend on the advertising from the council and airport....
If people want to know more check Fight the Flight (this is a residents campaign group).
Crossrail and Wallasea Island
Above is the Crossrail Route connections map showing all stations and their links. It is intended as a local 'Metro' style service and is due for completion in 2017. The spoil from the extensive network of tunnels will be transported by rail and ship to be deposited at Wallasea Island in Essex the largest wetland conservation and regeneration scheme in Europe. 'The aim of the project is to combat the threat from climate change and costal flooding by recreating the ancient wetland landscape of mudflats and saltmarsh, lagooons and pasture....to help compensate for the loss of such tital habitats elsewhere in England'.

Richard Rogers on Cities
Great talk here by the mighty Richard Rogers, 4 parts to the talk well worth watching in my opinion, interesting ideas on sustainable urban regeneration.
Main principles are:
-Compact and poly-centric form
-Live work leisure
-Good communication
-Ecological Awareness
-Good Design
-Economically Strong
-A just society
However, major importance for the future is to reduce dependency on cars, this can be achieved through creating good transport links, good design and all of the above.....
So what are you waiting for, watch away.... just go to http://www.gleeds.tv/ , type Richard Rogers into the search and its the 4 part talk dated 2007.
Enjoy and be inspired, we have the power to change the world!

Our SWOT Analysis
The SWOT analysis from today and it also includes the brain storm. Please feel free to comment. I have made minor adjustments. Also, I remembered Tom's comments from this morning that when we present it, we need to add images to explain each of the items. I think we should try to edit this chart - which, as Tom suggested, will be hard. I shall try to have a go at this and then find some images to go with each point. However - we have 5 minutes total presentation in 2 weeks time for our crit!

First interaction with the site
My first respond to the site was that the whole walk is heavily air-polluted by noise of industrialisation. I agree with Simon and Juliet that those huge open lands deliver great opportunities for the long lasting projects if they’re wisely planned.
Future developments could introduce interaction between those lands. They should be co-ordinated into linked pleasant creatures through varieties of pathways. They would not only interact on horizontal level but on vertical as well. The great examples are connection between skyway and paveway, which is pictured by the bridge over Royal Victoria Docks to Excel. Cable cars will be another great example of that connection.
Another thought arose when we departed to the end of our walk; I realize the luck of recreational activities/facilities through the whole journey. Maybe that could bring life to the area.
I’m also very excited about huge amount of access to water. Great maintenance of those blueways should take place!
and also...watch out for pylons....
Karolina
Initial Response Monday 3rd October
Reading Tom Turner's paper, Greenways, Blueways, Skyways and Otherways to a better London, really helped me to put this project into perspective and helped clarify the requirements of the brief.
So, after our five mile trek in the heat across the Royal Docks today, I feeling very inspired by the process of Urban Planning and especially thinking about the prospect of a vision for 300 years. There is so much room for change here, despite much of the development being relatively contemporary.
The cable car project ( A Skyway), due to be launched next year is innovative and should be successful as a tourist attraction as well as for transport. I hope that this is the beginning of a much greater project for the whole of London. On the larger scale, we need to examine the Crossrail route which will link the area to North Kent, Essex and Berkshire.
The roads are busy and not pedestrian friendly and new paving at Albert Dock is banal and unimaginative. It will be challanging obligation to find an original solution to these design problems.

Heading East
Walking East in the shadow of Canary Wharf I feel echos of America, of post-industrial suburbia, the urban sprawl, the concrete jungle, a cancerous expansion of urban mutation; with a dependence on the automobile.
What strikes me, aside from waves of depression, are the 'Spaces In Between' and it is these spaces that inspire me in my role as a landscape architect today; as one of responsibility and opportunity. To fill up these spaces with function and form, to breathe life into these pockets of potential and to be the antibodies that tackle the cancer. But, this mutation cannot be stopped therefore it must be directed, guided, teased and tickled appropriately within a bigger vision, one of the 300 year mark...
